Description
St. Louis's Old Courthouse, site of the famous Dred Scott case, is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and operated by the National Park Service. Here it is depicted as an photographic abstract of reflections in the many windows of a nearby skyscraper. The Federal style courthouse was completed in 1828. It was designed by the firm of Lavielle and Morton, but has undergone several redesigns and renovations, including the replacement of an original cupola in 1861 by William Rumbold with an Italian Renaissance cast iron Dome modeled on St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, and built with wrought and cast iron with a copper exterior.
